Set up for Success: Stop unwanted behaviors BEFORE you send your dog on the outrun

August 10, 20241 min read

Let's be honest: these dogs can learn or "pattern" behaviors incredibly quickly. In fact, I'm often amazed at how swiftly they can adopt a "bad" behavior! During training, I focus on preventing these habits from developing in the first place, saving me the time and effort of retraining for the desired behavior.

A perfect illustration of this is when I send my dog on an outrun to gather the livestock. Whether I'm gathering my flock in the field or walking to the handler's post during a competition, I want my dog to remain calm and attentive, actively searching for the sheep.

Here’s excitable Annie showing us what NOT to do, followed by an improved version! Join us while we work on Annie's behaviour while setting her up for an outrun.
